Detention ponds can pose a risk for your health and safety. When not properly maintained, they can become breeding grounds for mosquitoes and toxic bacteria.

Detention ponds are expensive. They are expensive to build, expensive to maintain and eat valuable real estate. These ponds can be drowning hazards and when not properly maintained, as is more often the case than not, can be breeding grounds for mosquitoes and toxic bacteria.

But not having detention is not an option. Not having adequate stormwater detention can be even more expensive, not to mention not permittable by city or county ordinance. Inadequate stormwater detention has contributed to massive flooding across the country. Detention ponds reduce runoff and provide a place for stormwater to be detained and runoff slowed. Without stormwater detention areas, more property damage will be added to the billions in damage in storm ravaged areas. Public safety is also at stake during flood events. Bottom line – we need more capacity for stormwater to be detained, not less.

TRUEGRID Permeable Pavers are easy-to-install and virtually maintenance-free.
TRUEGRID Permeable Pavers are easy-to-install and virtually maintenance-free.

TRUEGRID permeable paving provides a way to have your cake and eat it too. When you build with the 100 % pervious TRUEGRID system, you’re providing a better, more natural and less expensive way to provide stormwater detention capacity.

TRUEGRID is a porous plastic grid paving system that is built with a rock sub-base under the grid and filled with gravel. Rain infiltrates through the gravel filled TRUEGRID pavement at a rate of over 800 inches per hour.

This means that when heavy rain hits the surface, it is absorbed virtually instantly with zero runoff. Also, the rock in the sub-base and the infill of the grid is clean, washed gravel that has void area between the angular rock. This void area provides detention capacity for stormwater at a rate of 40%.

A typical commercial parking lot paved with TRUEGRID and coded for 100% pervious cover and stormwater detention will have a 10-inch cross section, 8 inches of rock sub-base and 2 inches of gravel filled grid.

How to Calculate Stormwater Detention Capacity
The detention capacity is calculated by the area (square feet) x the depth (feet) x 0.40 which yields the cubic feet of water storage capacity. If more capacity is needed the depth of the rock sub-base can be increased.

So, when developing a site, use the TRUEGRID permeable paving system and effectively put your stormwater detention pond under your parking or driving paved surface. THE TRUEGRID paved area is eligible for 100% pervious cover credit as well as stormwater detention capacity.

Now you’ve accomplished three things:

 1) saved construction costs versus building a separate detention pond, 2) saved long term maintenance as TRUEGRID is virtually maintenance free and will provide detention capacity for the life of your project, 3) saved land which can be utilized for a bigger building (impervious), parking or other revenue generating uses. Your money pit is now a money maker!
